Bowles, Simpson Statement on Super Committee

Printer-friendly version

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC -- Yesterday, the Joint Select on Deficit Reduction ("Select Committee") had its first organizational meeting and will be holding its first public hearing on September 13. Fiscal Commission and Moment of Truth project co-chairs Erskine Bowles and Senator Alan Simpson released the following statement:

"As the Select Committee begins its work, we wish to extend our sincere best wishes to the members.  From our experience as co-chairmen of the Fiscal Commission, we indeed know the magnitude of the problem and the serious challenges the Select Committee will face in coming to a solution.  However, we also know that a bipartisan agreement that truly and honestly tackles our debt problem is possible as long as all sides are willing to put all their sacred cows in the corral, check party politics at the door, think outside the box, and think more about America.

We are very encouraged by comments from Select Committee members from both parties about their willingness to go through the process with an open mind and put 'everything on the table.'  We have also been pleased to hear that Select Committee members are looking to the work of the Fiscal Commission as a possible model for an agreement and as a source of policy ideas.

Building trust and mutual respect will be critical to the success of the Select Committee.  It took time for Fiscal Commission members to develop not only trust in each other, but confidence in the process.  Yet once we reached that point, we were then able to reach a principled compromise that earned bipartisan majority support.

We earnestly encourage the members of the Select Committee to place the national interest ahead of the many powerful special interests, and devise a plan of which the American people can be proud."
